Intercultural Education

In Northern Ireland Interculturalism in education means the recognition of the right of different cultures to be included in the curriculum and to be recognised and valued for their uniqueness.

An intercultural curriculum does not present one culture as the 'norm', rather it reflects an equality of cultural esteem for all.
Netconnect is being developed as a support resource for intercultural education with Key Stage 3 students. It aims to support work in Education for Mutual Understanding and Cultural Heritage.
Students have opportunities to:

recognise that a range of 'cultures' exist within Ireland;
explore some cultural traditions of themselves and others;
identify similarities and differences between the characters' experiences and their own;
increase their awareness, understanding and valuing of themselves and others.

Through talking and listening activities, role plays, and written activities students can explore and share their ideas about the issues downloaded each half term NetConnect supports students in work to help them develop an understanding of how we relate to and value others. It can be a stimulus to identify and investigate any negative feelings we may have about ourselves and others.
